Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir has the distinction of having multifaceted, variegated and unique cultural blend, making it distinct from the rest of the country, not only from the different cultural forms and heritage, but from geographical, demographically, ethical, social entities, forming a distinct spectrum of diversity and diversions into its region, all professing diverse religion, language and culture, but continuously intermingling, making it vibrant specimens of Indian Unity amidst diversity. Its different cultural forms like art and architecture, fair and festivals, rites and rituals and language embedded in ageless period of history.
Despite their different origins and traditions, people in Jammu and Kashmir are bound by the common string of unity and cultural cohesion. In order to create a platform to promote local offerings, develop a sense of unity among the people of LJK and to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship, LEAD had decided to organize an event 'Mahotsav 2023 - Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh' on 9th and 10th of December 2023 at Gulshan Ground, Jammu.
This event was set to be a grand celebration of Swadeshi products, services, and culture in the regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The primary objectives of the Mahotsav were as follows:-
The Mahotsav was an initiative that embodies the spirit of self-reliance and promotes the rich variety of Swadeshi goods and culture within our beloved regions. This two-day event featured a diverse array of activities, including trade and commerce exhibitions, cultural events, local cuisine showcases, and engaging activities tailored for people of all age groups. Around 100-120 stalls, showcasing the diverse array of indigenous products and services available in our region were present during the event. Moreover, a series of captivating events specifically tailored for students and children, ensuring that the event would be an educational and entertaining experience for young minds were organized. Around 18000-20000 people witnessed the grand and magnificent event. The event was a transformative event for our region, promoting economic development, cultural preservation, and unity among our people.
In the heartland of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, Mahotsav 2023 unfolded as a festival of cultural celebration, giving a stage to the vibrant young talents of the region. A standout feature of Mahotsav 2023, resonating with tradition and creativity, was SABRANG.
SABRANG aimed to shine a light on and promote the indigenous folk, art, traditions, customs, crafts, and culture of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. This event provided a unique platform for students to showcase their talents and actively contribute to the diverse cultural richness of our community. The stage was set for the younger generation to step into the spotlight, represent their schools and colleges with pride, and display the talent that defines our region.
The event encompassed a range of engaging competitions tailored for school students, including Fancy Dress Competition, Essay Writing, and Painting Competition. These activities not only sparked creativity but also provided a platform for self-expression and cultural exploration. Folk Dance performances from college students of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh took center stage, weaving together graceful movements and vibrant colors that embody the soul of our cultural heritage. The spirit of patriotism echoed through the Patriotic Group Song, uniting voices in a harmonious celebration of love for the nation. Adding a personal touch, the Folk Group/Solo Song performances provided an opportunity for students to express and amplify the diverse musical traditions thriving in our region.
Divisional Commissioner of Jammu Ramesh Kumar during his address note mentioned that Mahotsav 2023 showcases the art, culture, and traditions of the people living here. He highlighted the importance of preserving our customs and rituals while also cultivating the values and understanding among new generation. He underscored the festival's role in bridging the gap between generations and ensuring that our cherished customs are passed down to future generations.
The SABRANG served as a platform for fostering cultural awareness and appreciation among the communities. It was a vibrant and dynamic event that drew an overwhelming response from the participants. The enthusiasm was appreciable, with a remarkable number of schools and colleges joined in the festivities. Around 35 schools and 10 colleges enthusiastically participated in the spirit of SABRANG, showcasing their unique traditions, art forms, and talents. This diverse participation not only highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the region but also emphasized the importance of cultural exchange and mutual respect. The Mahotsav truly brought people together, fostering a sense of unity and pride in our shared identity.
The vibrant union territories of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh witnessed a grand celebration of local pride and entrepreneurial spirit during the two-day extravaganza, the Grand Mahotsav 2023, and the Entrepreneur Conclave - Swavlambhan se Swabhiman organized in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Jammu, during the Mahotsav. The LEAD IIM Jammu Entrepreneur Conclave aimed to nurture the spirit of self-reliance and pride, aligning seamlessly with the ideals of Startup India. The opening ceremony commenced with an engaging AV presentation by LEAD, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and anticipation. A comprehensive overview of the Memorandum of Understanding between LEAD and IIM underscored the commitment to promoting and encouraging entrepreneurship in the regions of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Keynote speakers, including Shri Sunil Shah, Director of LEAD, and Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director of IIM Jammu, shared insights into the significance of celebrating local excellence and emphasized the conclave's mission to tap into local potential, promoting entrepreneurship as a means to foster unity and pride in the region. The uniqueness of the program was emphasized by Shri Anil K Goel, Independent Director of J&K Bank, who lauded the event as the first of its kind in the Union Territory. Shri R. K Chhibber, Former CEO and Managing Director of J&K Bank, addressed the issue of diminishing self-reliance in today's youth, advocating for increased exploration of entrepreneurial opportunities. Dr. Hina Shafi Bhat, Hon'ble Vice Chairperson of J&K Khadi & Village Industries Board, encouraged female students to embrace entrepreneurship and contribute actively to the progress of the Union Territory. Smt. Shakti Munshi, Member of JKSC, highlighted the conclave's role in promoting entrepreneurship and cultivating a robust business ecosystem. Insights into IIM Jammu's initiatives were provided by Dr. Muqbil Burhan, Chairperson of Srinagar Off-Campus, shedding light on the institute's efforts to establish a sustainable ecosystem in the region.
The event reached its height with a captivating audio-visual presentation featuring successful entrepreneurs, followed by a panel discussion that brought forth the voices of dynamic wntrepreneurs of the region including - Ms. Pooja Gupta (Nimbark/ Sarveshwar), Sh. Shubham Sharma (Kaladi Factory), Ms. Mansi Sharma (Manukrishi), Sh. Arjun (Genetico), Sh. Vaibhav Sharma (Himalaya 360), Sh. Shivang Satya Gupta (Espa Learn P Ltd.) and Sh. Abhimanyu (Jai Organics). Each entrepreneur shared their inspiring venture story, offering valuable insights and lessons learned from their experiences. Their diverse backgrounds and perspectives enriched the discussion, leaving the audience inspired and motivated to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.
The event not only celebrated local talent but also served as a catalyst for realizing the dream of a self-reliant and prosperous India by 2047. The journey from 'Swavlambhan' to 'Swabhiman' has just begun, and the path ahead promises empowerment and transformation for generations to come.
Mahotsav 2023 featured a special ceremony called "Veer Naari Samman Samroh," dedicated to honoring the courageous Veer Naaris-women who endured the ultimate sacrifice of losing their dear ones for the nation. The event was organized by Akhil Bhartiya Purv Sainik Sewa Parishad, was graced by Union Territory Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha as the chief guest.
During the ceremony, Lt. Gov. Manoj Sinha acknowledged the significant contribution of these families to the country, emphasizing that their sacrifices, along with those of the security forces, army, and Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel, should never be forgotten. The eyes of the audience present in this program kept becoming moist when the heroic stories of the martyrs were mentioned.
In a touching moment, Lt. Gov. Manoj Sinha personally descended from the stage to honor the brave women. He expressed his best wishes for Mahotsav 2023 and commended the ongoing efforts of LEAD for the economic development of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
LEAD Directors Manish Ahluwalia & Sunil Shah, Sanjeev Sharma, Board Member LEAD, and officials of Akhil Bhartiya Purv Sainik Sewa Parishad extended honors to GOC 26 Infantry Division Major General Gaurav Gautam, retired Lieutenant General RK Sharma, Major General SK Sharma, Brigadier Balveer Singh Sambyal, Col. VS Mangotra, and others. Notably, there were 103 Veernaris present, and approximately 1200 Ex-servicemen attended the event. Col Sukhvir Mankotia and Capt Krishan Singh managed the stage.
One Veernari expressed gratitude, stating, "It's a first-of-its-kind honor that we received. We are thankful to the organizers and Akhil Bhartiya Poorva Sainik Seva Parishad for honoring us and remembering our loved ones who didn't hesitate to make the supreme sacrifice to safeguard our Matribhumi."
In a mesmerizing display of theatrical artistry, Mahotsav 2023's second day unfolded "Natyotsav," the drama festival organized by LEAD, at the Police Auditorium, Gulshan Ground, Jammu. The event took a special moment to honour the Ramleela clubs that have tirelessly performed tales from the Ramayana in the J&K region for many years. This heartfelt honour acknowledged the enduring commitment of these clubs in preserving cultural traditions and enriching the community with the timeless stories of Ramayana.
Sanatan Dharam Sabha took the opportunity to honor the officials of all the committees involved in this cultural celebration. The emotional and touching scenes of Ramleela presented by Shri Sanatan Dharma Natak Samaj Diwan Mandir Jammu effectively brought the stage to life. The audience was transported into the realms of Bharat Milap and Sita Haran, experiencing not only entertainment but also a deep cultural immersion rooted in religious narratives that have stood the test of time.
The event featured various Ramleela committees, including Shri Ramleela Club Patel Nagar Kathua, Shri Ram Natak Sabha Kathua, Shri Ramleela Club, Shri Ramleela Club Ramkot Bilwar, Shri Ramleela Club Kuta Hiranagar, Shri Ramleela Club Ghagwal Samba, Shri Ramleela Club Samba, Krishna Dramatic Club Mandi Floor Samba, Data Ranpat Dev Ramleela Club Channi Himmat Jammu, Shri Ramleela Club Sainik Colony, Shri Sanatan Dharma Natak Samaj Diwan Mandir Jammu, Shri Ram Leela Natak Samaj Billu Mandir Panj Tirathi Jammu, Shri Ramleela Club Khattar Nowshera, Shri Ramleela Club Gagrot Nowshera, Shri Ram Adarsh Kala Kendra Udhampur, Shri Ram Natak Kala Kendra Kallar Udhampur, Shri Ram Kala Kendra Chabutra Bazaar Udhampur, Mahaveer Youth Kala Kendra Garhi Udhampur, Narayan Kala Kendra Rambal Udhampur, Shri Ram Kala Kendra Kaili Mandi Samba, and many others.
In addition to honoring Ramleela committees, Natyotsav recognized the contributions of senior citizens who have positively impacted society. Individuals like Dr. Chandramoli Raina (Astrologer), Shri KK Khosa (President-Kashmiri Pandit Sabha), Mahamandaleshwar Swami Suchetanand (Divya Jyoti Sansthan), Shri Arun Choudhary (President- Arya Pratinidhi Sabha), Shri Dev Raj Sharma (Bharat Vikas Parishad), representatives from Bharat Mata Mandir Samiti and Brahma Kumari.
Religious folk song performances added a vibrant atmosphere to the auditorium, creating an immersive experience for the audience. President of Sanatan Dharma Sabha, Purushottam Dadhichi, presided over the event, honoring the representatives of organizations that played pivotal roles in making Natyostav a resounding success. He expressed gratitude for their dedication to preserving and promoting cultural heritage, marking the end of event filled with theatrical brilliance and cultural richness.
As the beats of traditional Dogri music fill the air, the essence of the culture comes to life. The melodic tunes of instruments like dholak, nagara, and flute resonate, carrying with them the soulful echoes of generations past. These rhythms serve as the heartbeat of the Dogri cultural experience, weaving a connection between the present and the age-old traditions. During Mahotsav 2023, the spotlight was on Duggar Malati which means Coming together of the Duggars.
The event experienced a traditional Dogra wedding by name "Bobo de Potre da Vyah" which means Wedding of Grandson by his Grandmother. The event beautifully presented the rich rituals and heartfelt moments from detailed preparations to the wedding ceremony, the audience was captivated by mantra chanting, havan rituals, and vibrant pooja ceremonies dedicated to Kuldevi & Devtas, accompanied by rich folk songs. The act was performed by The Creativity Crew managed by Usha Slathia performed by lead artist Madan Rangila and others. The scene witness celebration at the bride's house included traditional elements like Barat, Sandh, and captivating Dogri folk dances. This immersive experience not only delighted the senses but also connected the audience with the cultural richness of Dogra weddings.
In the heart of Duggar Malati lies the captivating "Rade da Tyaar" usually celebrated during Navratri festival. People engage in the art of burying the upper surface pots into the soil. These pots are transformed into vibrant canvases, decorated with colours which are extracted naturally. White dye from flour, Red dye drawn from bricks, Yellow dye sourced from the Haldi, and Green dye from leaves. People then do Chittarkari (Painting) on and around the pots, showcasing their artistic talent. Adding a touch of agricultural significance, seeds of Makki, Kanak, Bajra, and Jou are carefully implanted into the soil inside the pots. After the passage of nine days, the community witnesses the fruition of their efforts as saplings emerge from the soil. It is a communal celebration where hands come together to weave stories on the canvas of the pots, connecting the present with the traditions of the past.
The Gulshan Ground also witness Rangoli and Mehndi Competitions hosted during the event, showcasing the creativity of women and adding a vibrant dimension to the cultural celebration. This highlighted the dynamic and inclusive spirit of Mahotsav 2023. The judges of the competitions were Satish Sharma (Retd. Principal), Dr. Raj Kumari and Radhika (Councilor). The event organizer, LEAD, took the opportunity to express gratitude and honor representatives from various organizations and institutions participating in the culturally enriched Duggar Malati program.
Purnima Sharma (Ex. Deputy Mayor) was present as chief guest of the event. Sushma Ji (DDC Chairman), Vaishno Ji , Seema Ji, Vidhya Maton Ji, Balbir Kour Ji contributed in this event. More than 1000 people gathered to witness the traditions and culture of duggar region.
Furthermore, traditional local games like Stapoo, Bante (Marbles), Sat Santolia, Geeteyian, Rassa Tapna played, adding joy to the festival of Mahotsav 2023.
In a remarkable acknowledgment of selfless activities, the Prerna Pravah program extended its heartfelt appreciation to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) making significant contributions to the communities of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The recognition extended to the 37 NGOs for their tireless efforts in contributing to the welfare and development of the region. Their work reflects a commitment to social upliftment, and the Prerna Pravah program provided a platform to express gratitude for their invaluable service. The event commenced with a symbolic gesture of unity as all these individuals jointly lit the traditional lamp, signifying the illumination of hope and inspiration.
The Prerna Pravah program, graced by the esteemed presence of Satish Kumar, All India Co-Organizer of Swadeshi Jagran Manch as the main speaker who talked about employment-rich India. He said that the country is moving forward on the path of becoming a world leader. To hoist its flag on the world stage, India today stands at number one position in GDP growth, ahead of the developed countries. In the last few years, it has also been seen that not only the number of startups in India is large but India also has the number one position in giving maximum number of unicorns to the world. India is a vision of realizing a poverty-free, employment-rich India by 2047, which Swadeshi Jagran Manch has been doing under the longest India campaign, which is extraordinary and unimaginable. He admired LEAD's work and commended the organization for showcasing the culture and local offerings of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh at Gulshan Ground.
A theatre act performed by The Creativity Crew, addressing the issue of drug abuse took center stage during the event, delivered a powerful message to eliminate this societal issue. The event also witnesses Dr Ashutosh Mangotra and Dr Mukteshi Sharma, father-daughter duo Indian classical singing performance. A performance by Rassanpreet Kour, wheelchair user child, greatly boosted the morale of audience.
The program was marked by the participation of notable figures including Dr. Gautam Mengi, Shri Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP, LEAD Director Manish Ahluwalia, and Swami Yagyanarayan. Padma Shri Dr. Jitendra Udhampuri was present as chief guest of the event.
Sports in society for many years have played a huge role in many of our lives. They teach many life lessons and values to younger generations who play sports. Sports not only develop a sense of friendliness and team spirit but also help develop physical toughness and mental health. It shapes the body, and makes it strong and active. Participating in sports can teach kids Leadership, Goal setting, Discipline, and Sportsmanship. To spread awareness about the importance of sports in life and to honour sporting heroes, LEAD in collaboration with Kreeda Bharati organized Khel Samman Samaroh on the second day of Mahotsav 2023.
The event graced with the presence of remarkable athletes, notably International Para Archer Sheetal Devi, alongside other esteemed individuals like Abrar Choudhary, who secured the first gold medal at the National level in Athletics, and J&K Cricketer Shubham Khajuria. The mother of these atheletes Shakti Devi (Sheetal), Naseem Bibi (Abrar), and Varsha Khajuria (Shubham) were facilitated with prestigious award Jijabai Puruskar. The award was conferred by Kreeda Bharati.
The event also recognized 25 other sports personalities, coaches, and sports administrators for their outstanding achievements. The awards were presented by prominent figures including Sunil Shah (Director LEAD), Brig. Anil Gupta (Member JKCA), Sunil Sethi (Senior Advocate), and Gagan Kumar (Kreeda Bharati).
The ceremony began with a brief introduction to Kreeda Bharati by its secretary, R C Vaid, followed by a detailed report on the sports scenario in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir presented by the organization's president, Shiv Kumar Sharma. There was a gathering of around 1000 persons at the venue, including those awardees, their family members and friends besides 15 members of the Kreeda Bharati. To assist the organizers, 10 trainees of Kreeda Kendra Jammu were also present.
The Rang Tarang program unfolded the rich musical and cultural diversity of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, bringing together lots of artistic expressions. Senses were delighted as the artists from diverse corners of the region came together to weave a mesmerizing performance, showcasing the true essence of these lands. From traditional melodies to contemporary beats, the audience experienced the harmonic blend that reflects the cultural diversity of the region. Rang Tarang provided a platform, covering diverse music and dance forms of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh, the way never done before.
Folk artists of Kashmiri Dhamaal dance, Padder dance, Sheena Valley folk dances, Rouf, Pahdi dance, Gojri Dance and other dance forms of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh region were performed by the dance groups of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh region. They took center stage and captivated the audience with their spellbinding classical folk singing performances and traditional dance form.
BS Bali, the esteemed former principal of the local Art and Culture College, graced the occasion as the chief guest on first day of Rang Tarang. The main performers of the day were famous acclaimed singer of Jammu such as Sonali Dogra and Salathia brothers, Jeevan Sharma, Vishal Gupta, Bishan Dass Ji and also well-known dance groups of Jammu including Natya Roots by Akash Dogra and Natya Rang by Sunny Mujoo.
As the curtains drew to a close on Mahotsav 2023, the second day of Rang Tarang left an indelible mark. The main attractions of the day were star performers of the evening including Varsha Jamwal, Vibha Bharti, Anjusha Sharma. The renowned Music maestro Shri Ravi Sharma and Theatre director Shri Ravinder Sharma were felicitated on the occasion.
In the lively atmosphere of Mahotsav 2023, the resonating beats of Gatka echoed captivating every soul present. The ancient Sikh martial art, a dynamic blend of acrobatics and sword fighting, took center stage, showcasing its timeless significance.
As the sticks clashed in concord, the audience was transported to the bygone era where warriors honed their skills to protect the oppressed and defend righteousness. Guru Hargobind's introduction of Gatka to the Sikhs marked a pivotal moment, where the salute to weapons symbolized the sacred commitment to Miri-Piri - the balance of temporal and spiritual power as well as the necessity to defend dharma. As a result, it is commonly seen as both a spiritual and physical practice.
During MAHOTSAV-2023, an impressive exhibition of artifacts was organized and showcased by Shri Anil Paba, the Director of the renowned "AMAR SANTOSH" Museum at Police Auditorium, Gulshan Ground, Jammu with the primary objective of promoting, protecting, and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, encompassing tribal and folk art. This initiative aspires to create a symbiotic relationship between cultural preservation and economic development. Moreover, the exhibition aims to foster a deeper connection between museums and the educational system, envisioning a future where the integration of museums into academic curriculum will raise awareness about the country's heritage and instill a sense of pride in the younger generation.
The AMAR SANTOSH Museum showcased one of the most extensive collections of artifacts. The diverse array included fossils, stone tools, terracotta objects, sculptures, coins, stamps, weapons, instruments, ancient maps, and a rare collection of miniature paintings from Basholi, Kangra, Guler, and Jammu. Notably, the museum houses an extraordinary collection of works by the acclaimed artist Raja Ravi Verma. Furthermore, the museum is a treasure trove of manuscripts dating back to the 12th century and beyond, featuring scripts on Bhojpatra, Sharda, Arabic-Persian, Sanskrit, Takri, and more. This repository of historical and artistic wonders not only serves as a testament to the region's rich legacy but also contributes significantly to the cultural and educational tapestry of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Mahotsav 2023 was an art and cultural event organized by LEAD in collaboration with Institute of Music and Fine Arts, University of Jammu in which more than 20 artists participated. These talented young artists along with some art students created paintings based on the theme of Jammu and Kashmir's art, culture and heritage. A wide range of themes were explored through this event for instance Ajay Kumar, a young artist from J&K depicted the heritage of our region through Mubarakh Mandi in his painting. Rachita Dutta, another artist from our UT painted the essence of our famous Basholi miniature mixed with the famous motif of kashida embroidery of Kashmir. The famous temples of our region were also painted like the 'Bawe Wali Mata temple' which is an epitome of the faith and belief of all the jammuites was painted by the artist Malti Sharma and the famous Mata Vaishno Devi temple was painted by Monica Chauhan who is a student at IMFA. Events like these not only help in bringing out the best talents of the UT but also help in promoting the culture and heritage of our region which in fact helps in bringing out a sense of oneness among the young minds. The art produced during the event ensured that we all are connected through the same thread of our culture and heritage. Moreover, events like Mahotsav should occur frequently to promote and encourage the young and emerging talents of our region.
The whole painting camp was curated by Dr. Amarjeet Singh who is a faculty member of Institute of Music and Fine Arts, University of Jammu, expresses his views that it was a great opportunity for the upcoming artists and such types of art camps should be continuous and it will encourage the new artists.
The "Weapons Display" organized by the 26 Infantry Division of the Army under the "Know Your Army" program was the highlight of the Mahotsav 2023. The weapons used by the infantry battalion of the Indian Army were displayed for exhibition and school children were taught about the weapons effectiveness in warfare.
Not only the children but even the elders were very curious and asked a lot of questions to the army soldiers. The army personnel were very happy to see the love and respect towards the armed forces. Many college and school going children showed curiosity about joining the armed forces and the procedures involved in it. A special stall was set up to provide information to those interested in joining the armed forces.
Beyond the enchanting dance performances and traditional music echoing through the air, the various stalls emerged as vibrant hubs, each contributing a distinct and dynamic dimension to the event. These stalls, strategically categorized to cater spectrum of interests, offered more than just products; they provided a unique and immersive experience for the attendees, adding layers of richness to their Mahotsav journey.
More than 100 stalls were setup by the various Govt. Departments, organizations and solo businessperson during the exhibition. These stalls showcased different items, products & services. Cooperative Stalls, Educational Stalls, Startup/Private enterprise Stalls, JKL Business/Enterprises Stalls, Food Stalls etc.
The Tourism Department Kashmir stall at the Mahotsav unfolded the delightful tales of Kashmir through a mesmerizing display of artifacts and crafts. Visitors delved into the rich heritage, appreciated the exceptional beauty of Kashmiri craftsmanship.
Kashmiri Paaramparik Ghar paid homage to the heroes of Kashmir and illuminating the culture and tradition of Kashmiri Hindus. The walls were portraits of Kashmiri heroes who, through their courage and sacrifice, contributed to the historical legacy of the region. From poets and scholars to freedom fighters and social reformers, the stall commemorated individuals whose stories resonated with the essence of Kashmiri identity. Pujas, aartis, and traditional wedding ceremonies were reenacted, allowing attendees to witness the sacred customs that form an integral part of the community's cultural fabric.
At the Mahotsav, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board's stall, adorned with the sacred aura of Mata Vaishno Devi, unfolded a divine experience. Devotees were blessed with prasad, a sweet token of divine grace, while the symbolic chunni delicately conveyed the goddess's blessings.
